Abuja 2026: Africa comes to Nigeria

In May 2026 the velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, hosted the Confederation of African Cycling’s para-track and track championships. Nigeria’s para cyclists topped the table with 9 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze, and in the main track championships, against riders from Egypt, South Africa, Algeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ghana and Benin, Nigeria sat second with 23 medals late in the week.

The federation’s vice-president, Dr. James Amidu, said the results came despite old equipment: rival nations arrive with “bicycles specifically designed for each race”, while Nigerian riders “usually improvise”.
