Nigeria and the African Games
The African Games, known until 2012 as the All-Africa Games, are Africa’s biggest multi-sport event. They are owned by the African Union, run technically by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and marketed by the Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC).
Nigeria has taken part in every edition since Brazzaville 1965 and is the second most successful nation of all time, behind Egypt. It has hosted twice: Lagos 1973, the second Games, and Abuja 2003, when Team Nigeria won a record 240 medals, 85 of them gold.
The African Games are also where many Nigerian stars first made their names, from sprinters and wrestlers to weightlifters, judokas and table tennis players. Our sport pages list the African Games results for each sport.
