Ghana's bad week turned into a crisis at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday 29 September 2026. The Black Stars led Gambia 2-0 after 33 minutes and lost 4-2.

According to the Ghana FA, Ernest Nuamah scored from the spot after 27 minutes and Felix Afena-Gyan added a second six minutes later. Gambia hit back almost at once through a Muhammed Badamosi penalty and an equaliser before half-time, then scored twice more after the break, with Badamosi and Ebrima Colley both finishing with two goals. “We have to say sorry to our fans.”

Carlos Queiroz, Ghana coach

Two defeats from two

Five days earlier Ghana lost 2-0 to Ivory Coast in Bouake, where Malick Yalcouye scored just before half-time and Franck Kessie converted a penalty. That leaves Ghana bottom of Group C with no points, while Gambia have six and Ivory Coast, who also won 2-0 in Somalia, have six.

Queiroz, who took over after Ghana missed AFCON 2025, said he would be "the first one to resign" if that solved the team's problems, leaving the decision to the Ghana FA.

A long run without a win

Queiroz also admitted Ghana had not won a qualifier for eight matches. "Everything went wrong for our team," he said. Gambia were without their best-known player, Yankuba Minteh, yet still found four goals. Ghana play Somalia twice next and cannot afford another slip.
