Nigeria's Super Falcons start their journey to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles next month, and interim coach Augustine Eguavoen has named a 28-player squad for the two-legged tie against Comoros.

Both legs will be played at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State: the first on Friday 9 October, with Comoros as the nominal hosts because they have no CAF-approved ground, and the second on Tuesday 13 October. The players report to camp in Ijebu-Ode on 3 October.

A new start after a hard summer

Eguavoen, the NFF Technical Director, took temporary charge after Justine Madugu and his staff were dismissed in August. The 2026 WAFCON began with a 3-2 defeat by debutants Malawi, and a 2-1 loss to South Africa in the World Cup play-off on 13 August means Nigeria will miss the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil, their first absence since the tournament began in 1991. Madugu had led the team to a record 10th African title only a year earlier.

The squad

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade (Paris Saint-Germain) and Asisat Oshoala (Al-Hilal) lead the attack, and Chiamaka Nnadozie (Brighton) is back in goal. The headline recall is Ashleigh Plumptre, the Al-Ittihad defender, who missed WAFCON through injury.

How LA 2028 qualifying works

Africa has two places at the Los Angeles Olympics, and 35 teams are competing for them over five rounds, all home and away. Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana join in the second round. The winners of this tie move on to round three in February and March 2027, with the final rounds in October and November 2027.

Nigeria at the Olympics

Nigeria's women have played at three Olympic football tournaments, in 2000, 2004 and 2008, and reached the quarter-finals in Athens in 2004. Qualifying for Los Angeles would be the perfect answer to a difficult summer, and the path starts against a Comoros side coached by Youssouf Abdallah, who beat Sudan 13-0 in the second leg of their first-round tie.

Comoros should not be taken lightly: they reached this stage by beating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate. Follow the team on our Super Falcons page.
