The race that brought E1 to Africa

On the weekend of 4 and 5 October 2025, the Lagos Lagoon became the first stretch of African water to host the E1 World Championship, the all-electric powerboat series founded by Rodi Basso and Alejandro Agag, the man behind Formula E. Presented by FirstBank and backed by the Lagos State Government, the E1 Lagos GP was round six of the 2025 season.

The course ran along Five Cowries Creek, between Falomo Bridge and the Oriental Hotel on Victoria Island, with fans packed along the Marina waterfront. The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) closed the waterways from 2 to 5 October so that the foiling RaceBirds could fly across the lagoon at up to 50 knots.

The weekend opened with a regatta on Friday. In Saturday’s qualifying, Team Brazil took pole position, and after a tropical storm delayed Sunday’s programme, Brazil’s Timmy Hansen and Ieva Millere-Hagin won the final to give the team its first ever E1 victory. Hansen was named Pilot of the Race. Virat Kohli’s Team Blue Rising were second and Didier Drogba’s team third, to the delight of the home crowd.

Lagos on the world stage

  • Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the race as part of Lagos’s “blue economy” and tourism agenda.
  • Didier Drogba, whose team was the African-branded entry, and musician Wyclef Jean were in Lagos; President Bola Tinubu sent a goodwill message calling the race “a statement of intent” on clean energy.
  • The first African Blue Economy Summit was held in Lagos alongside the race.
  • Partners included FirstBank (title partner), Afreximbank, Oando, Vista Bank, Caverton and Guinness, with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, LASWA and LASEPA.
  • No Nigerian pilot raced; E1 has said it wants to bring an African pilot into the championship in future.

Will E1 return to Lagos?

E1’s 2026 calendar, announced in November 2025, listed a second Lagos GP on 3 and 4 October 2026. In September 2026 E1 announced that it would not race in Nigeria (or the Bahamas) this season, and moved its season finale to a double-header in Miami on 13 and 14 November. Africa’s place on the calendar went to Luanda, Angola, which signed a three-year deal and hosted its first race on 12 and 13 September 2026 (won by Team Brady). E1 gave no reason for the change. SitesNG will update this page if Lagos returns in 2027.

What is E1?
