The plantain hawker who became captain

Christian Chukwu was born in Enugu on 4 January 1951; his village is Umuikowo in Nkanu West, Enugu State. His parents, a butcher and a trader, wanted him away from football and sent him to sell plantains. He played anyway, for his school, the East Central State Academicals and Enugu Highlanders, and in 1971 Rangers coach Dan Anyiam recruited him after a training match.

Enugu Rangers

Chukwu spent his whole career at Enugu Rangers (1972 to 1981), captain from 1974. After the civil war, the Rangers team he led became a symbol of pride in the East. They won league and cup doubles and, in 1977, the African Cup Winners’ Cup, beating Canon Yaoundé in the final.

Lifting the Cup in 1980

Chukwu won 54 caps and helped Nigeria to bronze at the 1976 and 1978 Africa Cups of Nations. On 22 March 1980, at the National Stadium in Lagos, he captained the Green Eagles to a 3-0 win over Algeria and became the first Nigerian captain to lift the Africa Cup of Nations. He was named player of the tournament.

Coach

He was an assistant with the Golden Eaglets who won the first U-16 world title in 1985, coached Kenya’s Harambee Stars, and was Super Eagles head coach from 2002 to 2005, winning bronze at AFCON 2004 in Tunisia.

Legacy

Chukwu died at his home in Enugu on 12 April 2025, aged 74, and was buried in Umuikowo in August 2025. Commentator Ernest Okonkwo’s nickname for him, “Chairman”, stayed with him for life.
