Careers in baseball

Your road into Nigerian baseball

Baseball came to Nigeria with American Peace Corps volunteers in the early 1960s, stopped during the civil war and was revived by Nigerians in 1989. Since then Nigeria has won two All Africa Games silver medals, built a national league, sent a Lagos-born outfielder to Stanford and the San Diego Padres, and in 2026 appointed a Japanese national team manager with one target: Africa's single baseball place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

This page is for young players, parents, PE teachers and future coaches who want to know how a baseball or softball career actually works from Nigeria. It explains where to play, how the league and national team work, the real rules for signing with a Major League Baseball club, what money exists, and how to build a career as a coach or organiser. Every fact was checked on 1 October 2026.

The honest truth first: no Nigerian-born player has yet reached Major League Baseball, and most Nigerian players are amateurs. But players of Nigerian birth or heritage have played professionally in the USA, Canada and Japan, and the national programme is growing faster than at any time in its history.

The pathway at a glance

Six stages from Little League to the national team

Step by step

Seven steps to a baseball career

Follow these in order. Each step builds on the one before it.

  1. Learn the game, and pick baseball or softball

Nigeria plays both. Baseball uses a smaller, harder ball pitched overarm. Softball uses a larger ball on a smaller field, pitched underarm, and comes in fast-pitch, slow-pitch and modified forms. Many Nigerians play both, and the federation runs both. A newer game, Baseball5, is the five-on-five version of baseball and softball promoted by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC).

    • Practise throwing and catching every day: these are the skills coaches notice first.
    • Ask your PE teacher whether your school plays baseball, softball or Baseball5.
  2. Join a club or youth programme

Baseball and softball are played in many states, including the FCT, Kwara, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Oyo, Niger, Plateau and Akwa Ibom. Angels Youth Baseball Factory, founded by 2003 All Africa Games silver medallist Adeyinka Adewusi, was set up to develop the game from grassroots. Lagos hosted the first West Africa Little League Tournament in April 2023 at Igbobi College, CMS Grammar School and the National Institute of Sports. The federation has also said it is taking the sports into Federal Unity Schools.

  3. Play in the national league

The 2026 league season brought together 17 clubs in regional centres including Kwara and Rivers. The top five qualified for the Super Five Championship, and on 25 September 2026 De Wills Baseball Club of Bayelsa beat defending champions Delta in Abuja. The main venue is the Adewole Baseball and Softball Park in Ilorin. Read the full story on our Nigerian baseball league page.

  4. Get noticed by the national team staff

In June 2026 the federation appointed Shinya Tomonari of Japan as national team manager. He has coached in Africa since the 1990s, including the national teams of Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya and Sudan. In September 2026 he said his staff were using the national league in Abuja to identify players for the national team. Selected players travel to Japan in November 2026 to train with professional and university teams. The league is your trial: play every game as if a selector is watching, because one is.

  5. Aim for Team Nigeria and the Olympics

Nigeria's best results are silver medals at the 1999 and 2003 All Africa Games, losing both finals only to South Africa. Baseball returns to the Olympics at Los Angeles 2028, and only one place is allocated to Africa. Nigeria's route runs through an African Championship planned for July 2027. See our national team page for results.

  6. Keep education at the centre

The two most famous Nigerian-born players both chose education as part of their route. Wande Olabisi, born in Lagos in 1988, played college baseball at Stanford University before the San Diego Padres drafted him in 2009, the first Nigerian-born player ever chosen in the MLB draft. After his playing career he studied at Harvard Business School. Demi Orimoloye, born in Lagos in 1997 and raised in Canada from the age of three, had committed to the University of Oregon before the Milwaukee Brewers drafted him in 2015.

  7. Learn the professional rules before anyone makes you an offer

Major League Baseball has strict rules for international amateur players, and knowing them is your best protection. Read the next section carefully, and share it with your parents.

Abroad

Going abroad: MLB, college and Japan

Many young Nigerians dream of America. These are the facts, so nobody can mislead you.

Signing with an MLB club as an international amateur

According to Major League Baseball, international amateur players must be registered with MLB in advance to be eligible. A player may sign between 15 January and 15 December, and must turn 17 before 1 September of the year in which he signs. In plain words: the earliest a Nigerian player can sign is at 16, and only through MLB's registration system. A real offer comes from a real club, in writing.

The college route

Wande Olabisi showed that a Nigerian-born player can earn a place at a top US university through baseball and still be drafted afterwards. College baseball also gives you a degree if the professional dream does not work out. Good school grades matter as much as your batting average.

Japan

Japanese support is shaping Nigerian baseball. Louis Okoye, born in Tokyo to an Igbo Nigerian father, played ten seasons in Japan's top league (NPB) for the Rakuten Eagles and Yomiuri Giants. Japan's ambassador to Nigeria publicly backed Tomonari's appointment in September 2026, and selected national team players travel to Japan in November 2026 to train with professional and university teams.

Money

Making a living from baseball

Here is what we could verify about money in Nigerian baseball. It is honest, not glamorous.

Our advice: treat baseball as a sport that can open doors to education, travel and coaching, not as a quick route to wealth. Look after your glove and bat, share equipment through your club, and keep studying.

Beyond playing

Careers around the diamond

Nigerian baseball and softball need many more coaches, umpires, organisers and youth leaders. These careers can begin while you are still playing.

Softball

Softball, girls and women

Softball has been played in Nigeria since the early 1960s, and Nigeria won softball silver as well as baseball silver at the 2003 All Africa Games in Abuja. Softball was once nicknamed “ladies baseball” because it was mostly played by women.

  • Softball and baseball both joined the Nigeria University Games in November 2025, giving female students a new competition.
  • Girls: ask your school, club or state association about softball sessions. Parents: ask who coaches and how young players are supervised.

Stay safe

Anti-doping, safety and fake offers

Three things protect a young player's career.

Anti-doping

President Bola Tinubu signed Nigeria's National Anti-Doping Act in April 2025. It created the Nigeria Anti-Doping Centre to apply the World Anti-Doping Code, with testing in and out of competition. Never take a supplement or medicine without checking it first.

Safety on the field

A baseball is hard. Batters wear helmets, catchers wear a mask and protective gear, and young pitchers should not throw too much too soon. Insist on proper equipment and a coach who limits young arms.

Warning signs of a fake offer

  • Someone asks for money for a “trial”, visa or “registration” with an American club. MLB requires international amateurs to be registered with MLB in advance.
  • An offer to sign a player who will not turn 17 before 1 September of the signing year: MLB rules do not allow it.
  • A promised contract with no written offer from a named club.
  • Anyone who will not let parents speak directly to the club or university.

What to do: check any offer with the Nigeria Baseball and Softball Federation, and confirm it directly with the club or university before you pay anything or travel.
